The Boat Shed, East Coast, Tasmania

The Abandoned Boat Shed.
The Abandoned Boat Shed.

Over the next few days I wil upload some pictures taken from a short holiday on the east coast of Tasmania. This first shot was taken about 10km south of swansea, this lone boat shed has weathered a few storms I would say….

Every time I drove past this shed in the past I kept on thinking to myself  “I must shoot that, one day…..”. Well don’t put off what you can do today until tomorrow.

If anyone knows of the history of this shed, I’ll love to hear about it.

Taking time to shoot.

Recently while away for work I had the pleasure of visiting a few new country’s, and I’d just like to encourage any readers of this Blog to always take the time to incorporate some photography into their trip, not just the tourist shots, but taking time to return to a nice spot or setting aside some time to shoot a particular event or location in detail.

Schedules are always tight when traveling, but I have found some of the better shots I’ve taken while away, like most good shots are the planned ones. Shots where preparation and time has been taken with a clear goal in mind, not just a shot from a moving tour bus.

Take the time, even if your exhausted, looking back you won’t regret it.

Canon 5D mark 2 and 24fps Video.

Will Canon leave 24fps in a full frame body to the 1Dm4? well heres my opinion.

If Canon releases a 1dm4 with 24fps and the 7D has it, but the 5D does not…. there are going to be a “lot” of very unhappy people in the cine world……

I can see the sense in making the 1dm4 have extra cool stuff like HD live video out while recording, but denying 24fps to existing users is just plain mean. If Canon want to maintain customer loyalty people need to know when they purchase a Canon product they are going to be looked after. If I knew Canon would add, if possible, any features requested by customers within reason, particularly if it’s going to help sell that product, I’d buy Canon every time.

The way I see it people have already invested in the 5Dm2, with other companies like Nikon pushing into the same market, why give people a reason to switch?. The new D700 will almost certainly shoot video, and I bet it wont be 30fps limited. It’s only common sense to keep their current customers happy, knowing eventually they will buy a new camera, and hopefully Canon. It may be a 1dm5 or a 5dm3, but they will eventually have to purchase a new camera for one reason or another…. Good lenses and equipment hold their value, so don’t think for one minute people wont ditch Canon for the next big thing, and a full frame camera that can shoot 24fps is what people want.

Update:

Rumor has it that Canan will be releasing a new firmware upgrade for the 5dm2 by the end of this year, with support for 24, 25 and 30 fps. Can’t wait to see how the 24fps performs.

Stars over Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour

It’s been a little while since I’ve added a shot to the store, but today I’ll be adding this shot. Pictured is Sydney Harbour, including the city of Sydney, The Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and The Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The colours in the water and city are not process in any way, they are direct from the camera. The water is calm and smooth due to a long exposure. The stars have been added, allthough there were stars there, the lights of the city made them allmost impossible to see. I have added the stars as they would be seen from another long exposure.

I hope you enjoy this picture.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Broken :(

Sydney Harbour

Recently I flew to Sydney for work and decided to go out and grab some pictures. It was a very warm day and the evening was quite warm resulting in a rather pleasant stroll around the harbour.

I took quite a few long exposure shots, but was very disappointed that critical lights were out on the bridge. (both sides). It seems rather silly that the powers in charge would decide to turn off lights or perform maintenance during a peek tourism time.

Maybe I can send them a few shots and ask for a ticket back in exchange for some promotional pictures. I have loaded quite a few onto flickr, and after printing a few prints, I may add one to the store.

Blogging the Great Barrier Reef.

Tessellated Pavement
It’s a shame there looking for someone “out there” for the great barrier reef job: http://www.islandreefjob.com/.

I would have put in an application if all they wanted was articles, photos, movies and a blog, unforchantly there looking for someone with that TV smile…. *sigh*

At least I can still keep shooting Tasmania, the shot above was taken at the Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck, in the early hours of the morning.

Taroona in Landscape.

Taroona Beach

The 5D mark 2 is working great and with no more “black dots” from the firmware upgrade there is no doubt this camera will give the D700 some good competition.

The only problem I’ve had so far is ungrading just about every bit of harddrive I have. New larger flash cards to support 21MP or 20-25Mb files for each photo, an 8Gb CF card only gets about 260 Shots. I’ve expanded my Storage bringing online another 500Gb of space, so that will probably last the summer 🙂

The shot above is a HDR taken at Taroona.

Canon 5D Mark 2

After being without a camera for over a month I thought I’d never get a 5D mark 2. Trying to track one down was a nightmare. In the end I found one locally at Walch Optics, thanks guys. 🙂

So how does it go? Well so far I could only test in overcast poor lighting, but I must say that the color reproduced is amazing. That coupled with the full use of EF lenses like the 16-35L makes for awsome sharp shots that are actually “wide” with fantastic color and higher ISO’s including ISO 3200 is perfectly usable.

More shots to come over the weekend with some good weather predicted…. 🙂
