50mm f1.4 @f7.1 with 68mm Extension Tube(s) “Extreme Macro”, originally uploaded by BrendanDavey.
Ever wanted a cheap Marco lens? Well if you have a nice 50mm why not try some extension tubes? The results so far seem to be good. I’ve only had a change to try the tubes on an overcast day with some “average” flowers.
I’ve inserted the origional as shot by the 50mm at min focal length to give you an idea of the magnification. For this shot I used all 3 tubes stacked together to give 68mm of extension. The DOF is very small and I had to push the f1.4 lens up to over f7.1 to get anything decent.
A few manafacturers make the after market tubes, the ones I’ve been using are the Kenko ones. The Canon ones are insanely expensive, and considering there is no glass involved it hardly seems justifiable.
